Rolex Explorer II

The watch of explorers

The Oyster Perpetual Explorer II is the reference watch for those who venture to the limits of the Earth, often in extreme environments.

Its 24-hour display provides an unambiguous distinction between day and night.

High mountains, oceans, volcanoes and polar regions have always been ideal testing grounds for Rolex.

Oyster Perpetual watches accompanied numerous Himalayan expeditions, including the one in which Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay became the first to reach the summit of Mount Everest on 29 May 1953. They were worn by explorers who travelled to deserts, the poles and the depths of the Earth. In these harsh and unfamiliar environments, distinguishing day from night can become impossible. For speleologists spending days in darkness and polar expeditions facing the midnight sun or polar night, the Explorer II and its 24-hour display are an essential part of their equipment.

Designed for exploration

Introduced in 1971 as the heir to the Explorer, the Explorer II continues the long tradition linking Rolex with exploration. Its additional orange 24-hour hand and graduated 24-hour bezel distinguish day from night. This function is particularly useful where the hours of day and night are difficult to tell apart, such as underground or in polar regions at certain times of year, and can also display a second time zone.

Chromalight display

The Explorer II offers excellent legibility in every circumstance. Even in darkness, its clean, high-contrast dial is easy to read thanks to the Chromalight display: the hour markers and hands are filled or coated with a luminescent material that emits a long-lasting blue glow.
