Rolex Explorer

The call of the peaks

The Oyster Perpetual Explorer grew from the privileged relationship that has always linked Rolex with exploration and discovery.

Introduced after the historic ascent of Everest in 1953, the Explorer delivers exceptional chronometric precision even in extreme conditions.

From the 1930s, Rolex equipped numerous expeditions with Oyster Perpetual watches. Feedback from their members was used to develop the purpose-built watches known as the Professional category, including the Explorer. Rolex watches accompanied some of humanity’s greatest adventures, notably Sir John Hunt’s 1953 Mount Everest expedition, during which Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay became the first to reach the world’s highest summit.

Designed for exploration

Introduced in 1953, the Explorer is distinguished by its clean design and highly legible black dial with characteristic 3, 6 and 9 numerals and large hour markers. A purpose-built watch, it displays the time clearly in every situation. The Chromalight display ensures excellent legibility even in darkness. Today, the Explorer is available in the original 36 mm size and in a 40 mm version.

Withstanding extreme conditions

Explorer watches have been continually developed to meet the needs of explorers: ever more robust and ever more legible. The Explorer 36 is available in Oystersteel or yellow Rolesor, combining Oystersteel and yellow gold, while the Explorer 40 is made exclusively from Oystersteel. Developed by Rolex, Oystersteel is a unique alloy with exceptional corrosion resistance.

The models are fitted with a robust three-piece link Oyster bracelet. Its Rolex-designed and patented Oysterlock safety clasp prevents accidental opening, while the Easylink comfort extension link allows the bracelet length to be increased by approximately 5 mm.
